7 TCM-Approved Recipes for Optimal Digestion
The Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective on nutrition is quite different from what we're used to here in the U.S. and that's why it's so helpful. Eating according to TCM principles can make all the difference for people struggling with digestive issues like bloating, constipation, reflux, diarrhea, low energy, & chronic inflammation as a result of eating the Standard American Diet (there's a reason the acronym is SAD).
Basic TCM Principles to Heal Your Digestion
Cooked: Think of cooking as pre-digestion, making the digestive organs' job easier.
Pro tip: start your day with a warm, cooked meal to set yourself up for success!
Simple: The simpler the meal the easier to digest.
Pro tip: when foods are cooked together in a soup/casserole, the body recognizes them as one synergistic food source, rather than lots of separate food items to digest.
Warm: Your digestive organs want to stay warm! Cold/iced food and drinks are a shock to the digestive system, and take lots of energy to recover from.
Pro tip: add a warm beverage (lemon water, tea, herbal elixir) to your daily routine to warm up your insides and support optimal digestion!
Routine: Eat at regular intervals. Your digestive organs are most primed to receive food between the hours of 7-9am, 11-1pm, and 5-7pm. Find a meal rhythm within these time-frames that works for you.
Pro tip: snacking/grazing doesn't allow your digestive organs to rest between meals, which will cause energy depletion over time. Eat enough at mealtimes to reduce snacking, especially after dinner!
